1XI Fight Hard for Points

By

Reigning Yorkshire Premier League North champions York were the visitors to Sessay on Saturday May 18th.

After putting York in to bat, Sessay had early successes when Joe Watson removed
Oliver Batchelor, caught by a juggling Navin Kavikara in the gully for 5, shortly before disturbing
James Billington’s off stump as York made an unsteady start on 19 for 2. The dangerous Duncan
Snell and Matthew Bell survived the occasional anxious moments and took the score to 97 before
Bell was caught on the edge of the fielding circle at mid on by Mark Wilkie as Joe Watson claimed
further reward for an excellent opening spell. Mid innings drinks saw York on 100 for 3, and soon
afterwards Nick James was caught at point off Navin Kavikara with York now on 118 for 4 in the
29th over. York skipper Snell was now in full flow and scoring freely with some fine strokeplay,
including a massive six into the car park, and almost inevitably reached his second century of the
week. He was eventually dismissed for 117 (11 fours, 4 sixes) when Jacob Spencer took a well
judged catch in the deep off Mark Wilkie with the score on 203 in the 42nd over, and Sessay might
then have had hopes of keeping the visitors to around a manageable 250/260 mark. Their hopes
were dashed by the partnership between Charlie Elliot and Tom Brooks, Elliot especially severe on
anything short, and with the pair running well between the wickets when not finding the boundary,
the runs flowed to the extent that the pair had added 90 in the last 8 overs as York closed on 293
for 5.
The Sessay reply began well with Mark Wilkie looking in prime form, and had reached a promising
57 without loss when rain brought about an interruption which held up play for almost 90 minutes.
Once again in this unsettled start to the season, Duckworth Lewis calculations were brought into
play, and when play resumed Sessay’s revised target was 278 from 46 overs. Wickets soon began
to fall as Wilkie offered no shot to Guy Darwin and his promising innings was cut short, lbw for 35,
and Sessay slipped to 91 for 3 as Mark Jackson was caught at cover and Joe Watson caught at
slip. Matthew Till had held firm but soon followed, caught off bat and pad to give Dan Woods a
second victim, and the 24 over mark saw Sessay on 97 for 4. Nick Harrison and Jacob Spencer
were tasked with a rebuilding job, and Harrison looked to be progressing nicely before he was
bowled for 17. Sessay’s realistic target had now become to get some reward by reaching at least
the 75% threshold and Jacob Spencer and Tim Hall looked to be closing in on that when Spencer
holed out to deep square leg for 38. Hall and Liam Carver soon followed, Hall bowled by Clarke
Doughney for 24 and Carver falling in similar fashion for 3 and it was left to the controlled
aggression of Navin Kavikara with an unbeaten 36 to take Sessay to their consolation points, the
Sri Lankan making an unbeaten 36 as he skilfully farmed the strike in the closing overs. Sessay
closed on 235 for 8, their score boosted by the award of 15 penalty runs as a result of York’s slow
over rate, the match concluding at 8.30pm.
All in all Sessay completed well in this contest, but whereas several of the home batsmen got
starts, none produced the big score needed to negate Duncan Snell’s effort for the visitors.
